Just uncovered some interesting google ‘eye tracking’ results done by a company called Enquiro.
If you take a look at the image below then you will see and understand how the average user uses the google search results.

From this image you can see that the average user only looks at the top 3 search results and then a huge decrease after that until the end of the first page.
This shows actual proof that getting your website into the top 10 and more importantly top 5 or top 3 is a really good thing to do.
Now this image doesn’t mean that if your 11th or 10th or anywhere near the bottom or on another page later on for a search term, that you wont get any traffic. All it is saying is that in order to get the most traffic you really do need to be in the top 3 or the first position.
Also for ppc it is interesting that only the top 2 to 3 results get the attention, so if you are doing ppc then you really do need to get up with the high paying results!
Now just because you arn’t in the top 3 or not the first position then that does not mean you can’t actually get more traffic than the websites above you!
